Berat-City of Thousand Windows

Although M. has been to Albania 4 times, flying to Tirana airport was a first, for both of us. Picking up our bright-red Ford Fiesta rented vehicle we were happily on the road again. M.

M. of course, did not neglect a smug smile and the double headed eagle hand gesture (see Albanian flag or any football match:p).

Our next stop was only a short drive from Tirana, the Berat city, also known as the city of thousand windows.

Being honest here, I’ve been nearly nowhere in my home country and I was pleasantly surprised by the beauty of Berat. The city has been part of UNESCO heritage since 2008 and in my opinion, it represents a typical Balkan architecture, rooting in the Ottoman empire era.

The old town was easy to walk, the people kind and curious. We were stopped several times to be asked where are we from. Trust me to Albanians is still a curiosity why would anyone choose to visit their country.

There wasn’t a single door which I didn’t like. Gosh I have a door addiction!

The horseshoe hung over a doorway in Albanian culture symbolizes the good luck spilling over your home, keeping the evil out.

Although our cuisine is not particularly imaginative, food in Albania is truly delicious.

On the way towards the south we made a few more stops, particularly to enjoy the view. Scrolling down you can see why.
